After extensive research and insight collection Sport England, supported by the National Lottery have developed This Girl Can
to share what they have learnt by providing guidance to supporters to promote best practice*
and deliver a national campaign which speaks to women from the view point of a women.
Cumbrian Girls Can has been testing whether more women can be encouraged, supported or inspired to be more active by supporting the This Girl Can campaign by localising it in Cumbria.
A partnership steering group has overseen the project. This has involved a host organisation – Cumbria Rugby Union, and Active Cumbria, Allerdale Borough Council, the Lake District National Park Authority and LynchPin Support.
Funding has been provided by Sellafield Ltd, through Cumbria Community Foundation.
Cumbrian Girls Can set out to be a community-led initiative. So the role of the steering group has been to support the organic development of the initiative based on engagement with the community.
The approach has aimed to:
- Go where women are… to seek local insight
- Establish an identity and profile, and start to form a community with a shared interest
- Test what works, and what women, organisations and communities are interested in
